Gigantic Gollum at Wellington Airport in New Zealand

image

A tired but jubilant Weta crew unveiled their new Gollum statue at a press function at Wellington Airport this morning. Working almost around the clock for three days, Gollum was hoisted up overnight to hover over diners at the airport’s main lounge. The 13m sculpture was designed and produced by Richard Taylor and Weta Workshop supervisors

Rob Gillies and Sarah Morris. Richard made a short speech to thank the team that made the incredibly realistic sculpture – a testament not only to their talent and hard work, but also to the technology and skills Weta has developed. He also thanked the “excellent” team at Wellington Airport, who have been a pleasure to work with in creating something that would bring delight to Wellington’s visitors. Airport CEO Steve Sanderson said the airport was proud to work with Weta and have such a magnificent sculpture on display. “Everyone will be amazed when they enter the terminal.”

Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown was also there. She confessed to being a true Tolkien fan. “I was given one of those paperback copies of LOTR for Christmas when I was 12. That was a very, very quiet Christmas as I read my way through those books!”

Church of Scientology Spied On Southpark creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and found nothing.

image

When Trey Parker and Matt Stone aired the South Park episode Trapped in the Closet which poked fun at the highest beliefs held by the church of Scientology whiling also poking fun at two of their best known members John Travolta and Tom Cruise the church decided not to sit by idly and take the jabs at face value.

According to internal documents which were recently unearthed by Marty Rathbun, a former Scientology executive, the church called for a “classic” investigation into the men’s lives.

That “classic” investigation is said to have included identifying the friends of Stone and Parker, performing public records checks and even going through both men’s garbage to find any incriminating evidence they could rustle up.

Rathbun says the church went through trash bins for:

“Phone records. Bank records. Personal letters that expose some kind of vulnerability. They’ll read stuff into the kind of alcohol you’re drinking and how much. Prescriptions. They’ll figure out your diet. They can find out a lot about you through your trash.”

Speaking about how much dirt the investigation was digging up Rathbun told The Village Voice:

“You can see that the commanding officer is pissed off and not enough is getting done.”

I personally find it hilarious that the church of scientology thought any dirt dug up on the creators of South Park would in same way allow them to pull strings, after all these are the same guys who make fun of mentally handicapped people, god, mormons and rednecks, sometimes all at once, bad publicity for South Park is Christmas come early.

The Incredible True Story Of Colombia’s ‘Godmother Of Cocaine’

image

Griselda Blanco, known as the “godmother of cocaine” among those in the narcotics trade, was fatally shot by an assassin on a motorcycle outside a butcher shop in Medellín, Colombia yesterday. Blanco was 69 years old.

image

Blanco was born in a slum on the outskirts of the northern Colombian city of Cartagena. According to Time, she began her string of criminal activity at the age of 11, when she kidnapped and murdered the son of a wealthy family. By 14, she was picking pockets and “turning tricks”.

After getting her start in cocaine trafficking in New York, Blanco became one of the key players in Miami’s booming cocaine trade in the 1970s and early 1980s.

In an industry that is predominately run by male figures, Blanco had a reputation as a cunning yet ferocious leader. Many credit her as the creator of some of the most ruthless, ingenious tactics in the drug trade — from using lingerie shops to smuggle cocaine in secret compartments, to the highly efficient motorcycle assassination. “She mesmerized people,” Bob Palombo, a former DEA agent who helped bring her down, told the Miami Herald. “She could woo you with her acumen and make you a loyal follower.”

Blanco was married — and widowed — three times, but was also was rumored to have killed all of her previous spouses. She even named one of her sons “Michael Corleone” to give credence to her image as a drug kingpin.

It took a ten year investigation, but Blanco was finally arrested in 1985 in Irvine, California. By the time Blanco was captured, she was moving around 300 kilograms of cocaine a month and the DEA considered her in the same class of criminals as notorious drug lords Pablo Escobar and Jorge Ochoa.

Blanco was staring at the possibility of a life sentence, maybe even the death penalty. She spent the next 13 years in federal prison on drug charges, after which she was sent to Florida where she was charged for murder.

But Blanco caught a lucky break. She was only convicted on three counts of murder (the DEA suspected that she was involved in over 40), but the Miami-Dade District Attorney’s office became embroiled in a scandal involving three secretaries in the office and one of Blanco’s top lieutenants. So instead of handing her a death sentence, the prosecutor handed in his resignation, and Blanco cut a deal to serve three concurrent 20 year sentences. After serving her sentence she was deported back to Colombia in 2004 where she spent the rest of her days.

“It’s some kind of poetic justice that she met an end that she delivered to so many others,” professor Bruce Bagley, the head of the University of Miami’s department of international studies, told the Guardian. After pioneering so many tactics in the drug trade, it was only fitting that she die at the hands of her own — the motorcycle drive-by killing.

World’s Shortest Man And Woman Meet ForThe First Time

image

Marco Frigatti, Official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, who also took part in the shoot, said: “It was an extraordinary moment; they’re both such incredible individuals. Everyone knew this was a special moment, the atmosphere was magical.”

The picture and new footage coincides with the recent announcement that the world’s Shortest Woman, Jyoti Amge, will visit the UK on the 13th of September to help launch the new Guinness World Records 2013 book.

Jyoti, from Nagpur, India, took the title of Shortest Living Woman when she reached the age of 18 in December last year.

She has a form of dwarfism called Achondroplasia and won’t grow any taller than her current height. Due to her size, she has to have clothes and jewellery specially made. She sleeps in a tiny bed and uses special plates and cutlery to eat. She loves fashion and make-up and is currently pursuing her dream of becoming successful actress in the movie business. She has already starred in a number of Indian films.

Jyoti said: “Since being recognised by Guinness World Records I have been able to visit lots of different countries. I love travelling. I have visited Japan and parts of Europe and now I can’t wait to visit the UK.”

In February this year, Chandra Bahadur Dangi from Nepal made headlines across the globe when he was crowned the world’s Shortest Man, standing at 54.6 cm (21.5 in). His size also meant that he inherited the title of Shortest Man in history, breaking the previous record of India’s Gul Mohammed (1957-97) who was 57 cm (22.5 in) tall.

Chandra is 72 years old and weighs 14.5 kg (31 lb 15 oz). Until the recent record announcement, he had spent his entire life in the remote Nepalese mountain village of Rhimkholi, about 250 miles west of Kathmandu. He said: “I’m very happy that I’m being recognized by Guinness World Records and that my name will be written in a book. It’s a big thing for my family, my village and my country. I am very happy.
